Sharks are an English punk rock band from Leamington Spa, near Birmingham, consisting of James Mattock (lead vocals and guitar), Andrew Bayliss (guitar), Sam Lister (drums), and Tony Corrales (bass).

Sharks formed in 2007. Their name is derived from a song by Gallows, ‘In the Belly of a Shark’. In 2008 Sharks released a five track EP, Shallow Waters, and subsequently played with Gallows, The Ghost of a Thousand, Fucked Up, Baby Shambles, The King Blues, Girls, Crime in Stereo, and Lostprophets. They supported The Gaslight Anthem during their 2010 UK and European tours.

Shark’s musical influences have been described as ranging from “The Buzzcocks, The Clash, Nick Cave, Joy Division, Husker Du, [to] Black Flag”, while Dan Martin claims that “the Sharks strain of punk is imbued with a blue-collar longing straight out of Shitsville USA”. As James Mattock, Sharks’ lead singer explains, “I got into [punk] from digging up old records. It was more of an American thing that I discovered from bands like Green Day and Rancid. Then I dug deeper and found their influences and I got my head around the history of the big punk family tree”. Mattock also states that he was heavily influenced by his parents’ CD collection. Lyrically, Mattock credits Charles Bukowski’s poetry with having “quite a big influence” on his writing. Sharks nevertheless say that they “believe in an uncompromised art to be embraced by any one who wants to listen. We don’t seem to fit too comfortably in any particular music scene anyway, and we’ll continue take it as a compliment and to be our own”

Meet English born and bred singer-songwriter Ryan Keen – an artist carving out his own unique
niche in music. Combining emotionally driven lyrics and warm vocals with his rhythmic-percussive
guitar playing, Keen’s songs recall a wealth of influences ranging from Buena Vista Social Club to Bert
Jansch, Coldplay to BB King.

Hailing from picturesque South Devon, the 24 year-old picked up his first guitar on his 8th
Birthday. From then on he began to learn one style after another: acoustic, electric, classical but
most noticeably flamenco, a style that is deeply rooted in the rhythmic-percussive finger-picking
technique that he is known for today.

In just a few years Ryan has released two EPs: 2009’s Aiming For The Sun and the forthcoming Focus,
he’s toured extensively around the UK; including supporting Ed Sheeran on his recent sold-out “+”
tour, and has built up a strong fan-base that seems to be growing by the minute. It goes without
saying that Ryan one of the most proactive new artists on the UK music scene.

Ryan’s new EP Focus will be released this spring. Its title track and lead single, “Focus,” (rel 19 th
March) is an inspiring song about not losing sight of one’s goals.

“I used to work a full time job and was trying to gig and write at the same time,” Ryan says. “It was
difficult and it got to a point where I was losing sleep and wasn’t getting anywhere so I went part
time at work, cut my costs and made music my full focus.”

And the results have been phenomenal. Soon after, the music industry began to take notice and
Ryan was able to pursue music professionally. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there. Last year
Ryan’s musical career was jeopardized when he suffered from a major wrist injury and it was unclear
whether he would ever be able to play again. “I had to re-teach myself to play the guitar but that
didn’t even stop me, “ He says. “If anything it only made me more determined.” Ryan’s story is
testament to anyone that dreams should never be compromised.

With a clean bill of health, fresh off the Ed Sheeran tour and an EP about to drop, things are looking
pretty bright for Ryan in 2012. The stop-motion animator Andy Shackleford (Postman Pat) has made
an amazing music video for “Focus” which is sure to garner lots of attention upon its release. He’s
also been pegged as the “One To Watch” in 2012 by The Daily Mirror. His single “Focus” has received
Radio 1 support from the likes of Fearne Cotton and Zane Lowe (He’s Zane’s “Next Hype”!) and he’s
preparing to hit the festival circuit this summer…first stop – SXSW.

The first ever Comedy Storage in the Loft takes place on Sunday 23rd September 6pm-9pm and features an opportunity to see Holly Burn’s latest Edinburgh show The H Club which Chortle described as “very, very weird” in their 4 star review of it. With Broadway Baby calling her an “acquired taste” and Kate Copstick describing her as “an extraordinary, fresh, strange new talent” we couldn’t think of a better opening show to be honest.

It will also feature award winning comedian Mike Wozniak performing Substitute Astronaut and other stories. A new piece he’s currently working into a show, as well as being hosted by Jordan Brookes and featuring a set from Charlie Webster.

Péchés Mignons continues to bring you flavours from across the globe. This time lucky people, PM is proud to introduce Viper Central this well acclaimed Canadian outfit who will be romping their blistering, fresh and energetic Bluegrass to the Moon Club.

Viper Centralis a six piece acoustic string band that takes that “high lonesome sound” to new places. All six band members contribute original songs but won’t hesitate to deliver up their take on an ages-old mournful waltz or bring the house down with a barn-burning bluegrass standard.

The band came together through a love for the old timey sounds of such artists as Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe, Hazel Dickens and the New Lost City Ramblers along with the more contemporary styles of acoustic innovators, David Grisman, Bela Fleck, and David Lindley. Everyone brings a colourful resume and a unique sense of creativity to this collaboration. While the members of the band play significant roles in many other roots music projects (Headwater, Redgrass, The Fugitives) the chemistry of the members gives Viper Central a one of a kind sound that will stick with you long after the show is over.
